- [Instructor] In this practice exercise we're going to make sure that we've developed the skill of taking a subnet mask in dotted decimal notation and converting it to the corresponding prefix notation. Specifically, we've got a subnet mask in dotted decimal notation of 255.255.255.248. What is that in prefix notation? In other words, in slash notation? Go ahead and pause the video once again and resume when you've got your answer. All right, let's check out the answer. What does this look like in slash notation? Well, we know anytime we have a 255 in an octet that's eight binary ones. So, we know that the first and the second and the third octet, they're full of ones. Meaning that that gives us 24 ones. But we got some additional ones, that go beyond 24 and that gives us the 248. So, we need to figure out how many left justified ones will give us a value of 248.
