- [Narrator] In 2017, New Jersey passed the New Jersey Personal Information and Privacy Protection Act. This act is narrow in scope and specifically covers the scanning of driver's licenses and state issued photo identification cards by retail establishments. For the purposes of this law, scanning means not just taking an image of the driver's license, but it applies to any type of electronic reading. The text of the law says that scanning means to access the barcode or any other machine-readable section of a person's identification card with an electronic device that's capable of deciphering information electronically encoded on the card. Retail establishments may only scan cards for eight purposes.
