- [Instructor] In the physical world, we use security guards to protect valuable assets. On computer networks, we do the same with different types of firewalls and other types of network defenses. Firewalls are hardware or software devices that act like the security guards of a network. Analyzing all attempts to connect internal systems and determining whether those requests should be allowed or denied according to the organization's security policy. At the very least, your organization will have a firewall at your network perimeter or border protecting your internal computers from external threats. You may also use network defenses to protect different parts of your inside network. For example, separating your manufacturing systems from your accounting systems.
