NETCONF in the Cisco environment

- [Instructor] Let's talk about NETCONF. NETCONF was originally defined by IETF to address the complaints by network operators for a lack of standard tool to manage their networks. It was originally defined in RFC6241 and 6242. And NETCONF usually defines a set of operations between NETCONF client in a NETCONF server. The client is your typical network management station or your script, and the server is usually the remote manage device. Sometimes the client could talk to an intermediate controller as well, as we have seen some of the examples previously. Also worth noting is that NETCONF was defined before YANG, so there's no fundamental dependency on YANG and we can use NETCONF without the YANG modeling language. NETCONF typically runs over SSH by default, and is on port 830. Each NETCONF message is either a remote procedure call RPC or an RPC reply.
