- The Linux desktop, now one of the more distinct advantages of Linux over Windows or Mac, is also one of the most confusing. Because Linux is all about freedom of choice, there is a lot of choice to be had, and that can actually make it overwhelming. Let's say you choose Ubuntu, that's a really good choice. It has a large user community, and enjoys good life cycle support, but there's actually eight official versions that all look and behave differently inside of Ubuntu. So for the most part, the difference is going to come down to which desktop environment of Ubuntu, you're going to choose to use.
