- [Narrator] We will be discussing Linux File Management in this section. Linux is an open source operating system, launched about 28 years ago in 1991. In 2018, it is the operating system that powers the world's top 500 supercomputers. By some estimates, 95% of the top 1 million domains in the world, are powered by Linux servers. There are also increasingly more networking gears that are powered by either Linux or Linux derived operating systems. Examples include Cumulus, Arista EOS, Cisco NX-OS, and Cisco IOS XE. There are many different flavors of Linux called distributions. They all share the same Linux kernel, but each comes with different packages, supporting system software, as well as libraries. Many of us refer to the distributions as simply Linux, but we should probably refer to them as GNU/Linux. GNU could also be pronounced as GNU.
