- [Instructor] The Hypertext Markup Language, HTML, is the basic building block of a website. HTML 5 is the latest version, and it's come a long way from the language that started the World Wide Web. Nevertheless, it's important to understand the basics. A web page is a text file written in HTML which in its basic form is quite simple. Let's build a webpage. The page starts with a declaration that the page is indeed HTML. And it's just always written as doctype html. After that the basic components of a webpage is an element of the form bracket element bracket, contents, and then bracket slash element bracket. With element specific information in between the start and end markers. The start marker may additionally have attributes in between the open and close brackets.
