- [Instructor] For an online merchant to take a credit or debit card for payment, it has to have the appropriate technology in place to collect the relevant data from the customer via the checkout page. Just as with some card present systems, in many cases, the merchant manages the checkout page and all of the systems between that checkout page and the payment gateway. This can include servers of all kinds. Then there are the networks the servers reside upon, as well as the connectivity internally and externally required for payments to be processed. All of these systems have to meet all of the card protection standards, which can be costly and time-consuming. The merchant can choose to pass off nearly all that responsibility to the payment gateway, usually by taking advantage of Iframes, hosted by the gateway, that pop-up when it's time to get paid.
