How does the Internet of Things work?

(light music) - [Interviewer] So, D.J., when I walk into my house my lights automatically turn on. I think that's pretty rad. How does all that work? What's that called? - Well, people are really calling it The Connected World. Another version of it is The Internet of Things. Is that you have an item One, it talks to item two. All of that is connected. Part of the way it works is there are many components in there. One is that you have to be able to recognize that you are present. Another needs to be a motion sensor or some type of location sensor, or it has to be able to recognize your voice. Then it has to have some type of way of messaging the device, and then the device has to say, oh, I understand what that message is, or that set of instructions. It says, hey, set the oven to this temperature versus this, or it says, I do not understand, and it fires back and then, you know, the device says, oh, I don't understand, and then tells you for, asks for other instructions, and there's a complex set of things in there. But the rubric of that basic set of things is how, what is the web that is constructed between all these pieces of technology to actually interoperate with each other, and then how do those collectively then work to solve a problem, and get better over time? How do they iterate? (light music)
