Learn about how the Horizon Agent must be installed in virtual desktops in order to make them accessible to the Connection Server. Explore key Horizon Agent custom options, such as Instant Clones, View Composer, USB Redirection, and more.
and what it's function is with Horizon View desktop virtualization. So we've already spent some time learning about the Horizon Client. And the Horizon Client is the component That's their actual device. And it might be running a soft client But regardless, that's the actual user device that they're utilizing. And what they're going to be doing is eventually connecting and establishing a session with the Horizon Agent on a virtual desktop. So the Horizon Agent is actually installed on the operating system of the virtual desktop. what makes it a virtual desktop. If you think about it, each virtual desktop is basically a virtual machine running on an ESXi host, just like any other virtual machine. I give it a certain amount of memory and CPU and disk space, and it just runs like any other virtual machine. What really makes it different is the installation of the Horizon Agent. running inside of the virtual machine that allows the Horizon connection server and establish a virtual desktop session. So that's the key element of my virtual desktop. So I have to have the Horizon Agent installed on all my virtual desktops. Now what you'll find as we move were based on a golden image. Like for example, if you were doing an instant clone pool you're going to have a master VM. you're going to have a parent VM with a snapshot. You'll have this one centralized golden image that is the basis for all your virtual desktops. That's where you're going to install the Horizon Agent So Horizon Agent needs to be running on all of your virtual desktops. installing the Horizon Agent, there are a bunch of features that you can choose whether or not you want to actually install. So let's take a deeper look at the custom setup options of the Horizon Agent and we're going to do that by going to docs.vmware.com. That's D-O-C-S .vmware.com and taking a look at the VMWare Horizon 7 documentation. And first thing we want to do is search for what we're looking for, which you can tell I've already done here. We have the Horizon Agent Custom Setup Options. Once you find what you're looking for, the great thing about the VMWare documentation is you can simply go over here to the right and choose the appropriate version. That's what we're going to look at. Okay, so when I install the Horizon Agent on my virtual machines, whether it is a parent or a master or a template, I can choose certain options So let's start with USB Redirection. USB Redirection gives our users the ability to physically connect a USB device to their client. So for example, they could be sitting here at their Horizon Client and they may want If they're physically plugging that device into their client I need a way to take that USB cable and basically extend it to the Horizon Agent. is that's where their desktop is actually running. what I want to have happen is I want my virtual desktop to behave as if that USB device is connected to it. That's USB Redirection. and connect these USB devices to my physical client and have them show up on my virtual desktop, I have to enable USB Redirection. The next feature shown here is Real-Time Audio-Video. So if they have a webcam or audio device basically make it seem as if their physical desktop So think about their physical client again. Their physical client could be an Android phone with local storage. If I want to make the local storage of that Android phone available to my virtual desktop I can do that using Client Drive Redirection. Virtual Printing, we're not going to get in depth on this one right now. We're going to cover printing later. that virtual printing allows us to leverage an existing set of printers that are already mapped on our physical computer. So if we're sitting in front of a physical Windows PC, we can leverage those locally installed printers. to synchronize the profile of a local desktop with a profile repository. That's an important one for using Horizon 7 Persona Management even though at this point we're primarily going to focus on User Environment Manager for our personas. And then we've got a bunch of redirection options. We've got Scanner, Smartcard, and Serial Port Redirection. We've got HTML5 Multimedia Redirection. These are all doing something very similar. we've got something physical at the client, whether it's a Scanner, a Smartcard, a Serial Port, we're looking to redirect those ports to the virtual desktop, just like we learned about with USB Redirection. I can plug something into a serial port, and whatever I have plugged into it is going to be redirected to my virtual desktop. directly to that browser. And this is going to reduce the workload URL Content Redirection is a pretty awesome feature. So let's say, for example, I am working on my home computer and I'm connecting to a virtual desktop using the View Client for Windows. And I go to my virtual desktop and I open a browser window and I type in pandora.com. is that URL is actually going to be opened over here So I don't have to drag all of that traffic through my virtual desktop, and through the internet connection of my organization. Of it's something like Pandora it would be much better to just simply open the browser and avoid sending that traffic over my display protocol. The Horizon View Composer Agent and the Horizon Instant Clone Agent, we're going to learn about those later. Same with Local Printer Redirection. We're going to learn about some of these a little bit later on as we take deeper looks at linked clones, instant clones, and printing. And so all the features that I just showed you, you can either choose to install them or you can choose to not install them. And then listed here are a bunch of features that are installed with the Horizon Agent no matter what. Like for example, the display protocols like Blast and PC over IP and the core functionality of the Horizon Agent. You can't choose to leave those out. They're going to be in there no matter what. So as you're preparing for your exam, you're going to want to have a basic understanding of all of these features of the Horizon Agent, and you may want to take a little time to review this lecture and to spend some time looking at this document on the VMWare documentation prior to taking your exam, detailing which custom options are available And one final thing I do want to note before I move on, as we're talking about the test, but there are certain options that are incompatible with each other, So you're either going to use linked clones or instant clones. You cannot install the agents for both.
