- [Instructor] Firewall rules can be complicated but I'm going to share a few things that I look for when my firewall rules aren't working the way I expected. One, remember floating rules comes first. If we go to Firewall, Rules, and Floating, you can see the floating rules that we have in place from both our rules that we've generated, and also the floating rules that have been generated by our traffic shaper. Remember if you have a floating rule, or many of them, and the Quick option is checked, they will apply to WAN and LAN interfaces, and they will supersede your standard rules. Those guys are tricky, so if you make a rule and it isn't having an effect, make sure there isn't a floating rule getting in the way. Two, remember rule order in Rules Two. Firewall rules are first match wins, so from top to bottom if you make a rule that you expect to work and it doesn't, it is likely because there's a higher priority rule that is interfering.
