- [Narrator] In this video, I'll describe one situation where it was reasonable to outsource a cyber security task and another situation where it's not. Monitoring network security 24 hours a day seven days a week is a big challenge for all but the largest organizations. The work is typically done by a team of experts in a security operation center, or SOC. Due to sickness, training, and other time off, there would need to be between eight and 10 employees to provide reliable coverage during an average week. The SOC is a good candidate for outsourcing. The work is not a core competency for most organizations and the economics are straight forward. In the U.S., an MSSP can be hired to provide SOC services for about $50,000 a year. In contrast, it's common for an in-house cyber security professional to be paid around a $100,000 a year in salary. Factor in benefits as well as facilities, equipment, and other expenses, and the total cost for each SOC employee can be almost three times…
