- A home network setup often includes Wi-Fi, but Wi-Fi is only part of a home network. When you start to plan a Wi-Fi network, it's important to think out what you want from the Wi-Fi portion of the setup and how other parts of the network will function, too. A home network requires a few different functions and while these are all often handled by one Wi-Fi-enabled router, we should have an understanding of the functions that are required for a basic network to operate and how they're laid out logically, which is called the topology of the network. If we were to show each function of a home network as separate devices, it would look like this. Access to the internet is provided by an internet service provider, or ISP. That ISP provides some kind of connection to their network, Usually cable, telephone lines for DSL, fiber, or sometimes, a microwave radio connection.
