Data science is disrupting every business

(upbeat music) - To all you data scientists out there, have you ever tried to explain to your grandparents what you do for a living? How did that go? Well, guess what? You're probably not going to understand the work your grandkids do, either. Work changes, and the velocity of change is ever increasing. As social, cultural, and economic models evolve, data scientists will be working in dramatically new roles in the future. This course is designed to help you be successful in this exciting and constantly-evolving discipline. Hi, I'm Christopher Bishop, and I've had many careers over the course of my work life, from touring rock musician to an exec at IBM headquarters. There was a point in my music career around the mid 80s when I realized that music was becoming data, and I had to embrace that change and evolve my own career. (upbeat music) Based on how I successfully navigated these various roles, I put together what I call a Future Career Toolkit that can help you successfully evolve your data science career. I'm going to start by orienting you to how we got to this place, provide insight on historical precedents from both a technical, as well as a business and cultural, perspective. Then, we're going to jump into the time machine to get a futuristic view of what's coming, describing the kinds of jobs that you might be doing in data science in the years ahead, and then, I'm going to show you how to use my three future career tools in order to be successful in these new roles. (upbeat music) By the end of this course, I hope you will have not only an understanding of how data science has evolved and where it's going but also specific actionable techniques for successfully identifying emerging opportunities in data science. (upbeat music) I'm excited to share my approach to future proofing your data science career, so let's get started. (upbeat music)
