- [Instructor] There is no known formal definition for data governance, so let's use one that is descriptive and intuitive. Data governance refers to creating a centralized and commonly agreed upon structure to identify data, measure risk, and therefore devise strategies to protect this data from misuse. There are four key components for data governance. First, data classification, where your legal and engineering teams and other teams across the company will rank your data based on risk and usage so you can protect this data appropriately. Data classification is like creating a business glossary that is shared, used regularly and continually updated so that your teams can build upon the same foundation. Second, data inventory.
