Data corruption issues

- Data corruption. The most ominous phrase to DBAs everywhere. It's the biggest fear that sure we have our data, but it's not what it's supposed to be. And there're really two classes of corruption. So there's real corruption where the data is garbled. It's messed up. It's just not data. So you retrieve a name of a person and you see odd characters, it's not even a name. And then there's not real corruption, but it's sometimes categorized as corruption where the data is wrong. This is usually just a validation problem. So whatever the issue, we want to know where do we go to try to find out what's causing data corruption. The first area to look is the application itself, so we're looking at application problems. And you want to verify the application code, make sure that the application is writing data correctly, there's nothing wrong in the code.
