Data breach notification laws

- [Instructor] Privacy professionals believe that one of the fundamental rights of data subjects is the right to be informed when their personal information is accessed in an unauthorized manner. This concept is known as data breach notification. The federal government does not have a data breach notification law, so the states have stepped up and created their own laws to fill in this gap. Now this happened in a slow manner, with California passing the first data breach notification law in 2002, and Alabama becoming the 50th state to pass a law 16 years later in 2018. While there are differences between the state laws, many of them were modeled after California's law, and so they share some common elements. Let's talk through some of those.
