- [Instructor] Employers often have the occasion to investigate cases of potential employee misconduct. These may come as reports from other employees or managers or from suspicions that arise during audits or other monitoring activities. Employers should take care to ensure that the data they collect and handle during this conduct investigations is protected from unauthorized access. This is important for several reasons. First, prematurely disclosing information from the investigation may jeopardize the integrity of the investigation by influencing employee conduct. Second, the investigation may include personal information about individuals who are not the target of the investigation. Third, the investigation may conclude that the employee did not engage in misconduct. And the fact that an investigation took place should not tarnish that employee's reputation.
