- The rapid rise of data science has produced an explosion of technologies. And as a data scientist, that means you have to be in the know of what's out there. Early in my career, even when I could barely afford it, I would spend about two weeks a year on professional development. Now that I'm more established, I try for at least four weeks a year or more. Now, you would think after 25 years of constant reading, attending training, and going to conferences, that I might reduce my investment. But four weeks a year is barely enough just to keep up. So how do I invest the time? In addition to lots of reading and online content, conferences are definitely part of it. And there are three distinct kinds of conferences to consider: professional, academic, and vendor. I attend all three.
