More than ever, the concept of big data is becoming important to security practitioners. Cybersecurity professionals often have to deal with large amounts of data that need to be processed and analyzed including event logs, vulnerability scan results, Wireshark results, and more. In this video, learn about the data analysis skills that can help you in your cybersecurity career.
- [Instructor] You may have heard the term big data. It refers to how current technology generates so much data that it can be very challenging to manage or understand it all. The cybersecurity field also involves large quantities of data. Examples of big data in cybersecurity include systems like next-generation firewalls, and SIEMS, which analyze network traffic, can collect and process gigabytes of data. Detailed system event logs, which can be collected for digital forensic analysis.
Vulnerability scans can also produce large quantities of data. And packet capture tools like Wireshark can pull in enormous amounts of data which can be hard to understand in raw form. But even with systems specifically designed to handle security data, humans usually still need to help process, interpret, and report on the meaning of all this data. That's why data analysis skills can be an important part of your cybersecurity career. Two areas of data analysis that are especially helpful to understand are data reduction and data visualization.
Because there's so much data that needs to be processed, getting rid of the data you don't need can save you a lot of time and energy. That's where data reduction comes in. One of the best tools for data reduction is Excel. Excel is packed with functions that can help you cut down a mountain of data to a more manageable size. If you don't know how to use filters, pivot tables, and macros in Excel, I recommend you take the time to come up to speed. After you've reduced, processed, and interpreted your data, you might need to report on it in a meaningful way.
This is where data visualization skills are useful. Data visualization is a lot more than pie charts and bar graphs. There are dozens of ways to visualize data, including bubble charts, heat maps, and sparklines. I've used all of these forms of data visualization in my cybersecurity career.
