- [Instructor] When you browse the web and use other services like email and chat applications, the information sent back and forth between your computer and the servers that host these applications is sent across your local network and across the networks that make up the internet. While we can't see that information easily ourselves because it's being sent as electronic signals, someone who can intercept those signals might be able to see what's being sent or even change what's being sent. Doing so isn't very difficult for someone with a little bit of technical know-how, but I say this not to scare you but rather to explain why we need to take a few easy steps to make sure our digital communications, especially web browsing activity, are protected. We can protect our communications using encryption which scrambles up the information in a specific way using mathematical keys that are known only to our computer and to the server that we're communicating with.
