iSCSI overview

- In this lecture you'll learn about iSCSI which is a popular SAN protocol which runs over Ethernet networks. (electronic music) iSCSI stands for the Internet Small Computer System Interface protocol. It runs over Ethernet networks, and was originally viewed as a less expensive alternative to Fiber Channel. So, back in the early days of SAN Fiber Channel was expensive because it requires its own dedicated infrastructure and accepted hardware types as well. So iSCSI was developed to be a less expensive alternative running over standard Ethernet networks. It does however have higher packet overhead than and has traditionally been seen as having lower reliability and performance than Fiber Channel. However, it is a very mature and popular SAN technology. As it runs over Ethernet, rather than Fiber Channel, it can share the data network or have its own dedicated network infrastructure.
