Wireless technologies and standards

- [Instructor] Let's talk about wireless technologies. So, a brief intro to wireless. An access point, or an AP, is the thing that connects the wireless world to the wired world, and the wireless device that's connecting must authenticate to the AP before it actually gains access. Now, sometimes we have what's called open authentication. There's still a little bit of an authentication that happens there, even though you don't put any password in or there's no key to be entered. And it works on a specific frequency and it identifies itself to the network so that certain devices can connect up to it and other devices can ignore it. It identifies it by something called a service set I-D, or an SSID. It's a way you can logically separate different networks all on the same air space. Wireless devices and APs use these service set I-Ds when authenticating and associating with other devices. You shouldn't consider an SSID some form of security.
