- So let's use another analogy. So I'm pretty sure most of us have used WhatsApp or Skype. These are examples of voiceover IP Overlay Networks. In this example the voice service is overlaid across the underlay network which is the internet. Now Skype and WhatsApp and other services that use VoIP have disrupted the traditional telephone network entirely. Years ago when I started teaching Cisco Call Manager PBX guys laughed at voiceover IP and told me it would never be implemented. John Chambers said that voice would be free and people doubted and argued against what he said. How things have changed today. Now in a traditional voice environment, where was all the intelligence? So if we had a telephone, let's say a telephone at your home, connected to a central office, so this would be a switch, a voice switch, in the telephone provider's network such as AT&T or British Telecom and so forth.
