- [Instructor] We've just covered consolidation and backup and recovery and now let's pivot our conversation into tape. Tape is an important aspect of any storage operation. It's absolutely required. But let's use it for what it's good for. And the fundamental message here is tape is obsolete for backup and recovery. Weekly, in incremental backups, tape is just the wrong tool for the job. Use snapshots for disk-to-disk backup instead. Tape is, however, absolutely mandatory for permanent data storage. It's absolutely useful and a required component of any professionally run storage operation. So we've got some SNIA exam tips coming up relating to tape drives and various generational things so the operative word here is Linear Tape Open. It's an industry standard, meaning that multiple vendors can manufacture tape cartridges to the LTO standard and multiple manufacturers can manufacture tape drives to the LTO standard and they will interoperate.
