- [Instructor] From the smallest network in a home with only one computer, to a major organization's network installation, all networks have a specific layout. To ensure that the network is properly configured, you must understand how the layout works. For both wired and wireless networks in a home or small office, you can start the layout with the modem. Now technically, it's not the start of the network as the modem is just another networking device, but it's a good place to begin your exploration. This device receives its signal from the internet service provider, which connects the modem via some type of cable. Another cable connect the modem to the router or gateway.
