- [Instructor] Let's understand the past so that we may better understand our present and our future. 20 or so years ago, big servers with internal disc drives basically ran one application. One server, one application. Not unlike this analogy here, one refrigerator, one big item of food. And like foods that should not be stored together, applications should not run on the same server because they interfered with one another. Drivers would fight, one application would use up too many resources, one application would crash and cause the whole thing to fall over. So back in the day to run another application, you had to buy another server or to expand this analogy, to buy another refrigerator. So to solve this problem, the industry came up with a concept called virtual machines and they behave a lot like containers.
