- [Instructor] Here's a pop culture trivia question for you. What do Chance the Rapper and Nine Inch Nails have in common? Well, as performers, not a whole lot, but they both have similar counterintuitive business models. They're professional musicians who give away their music completely for free. They've taken the one thing that people have always assumed was at the center of a professional musician's income and changed its role entirely. Chance the Rapper makes his money not off of his music, but off his amazing merchandise collection. And Nine Inch Nails also sells merchandise, including limited editions of their recordings that they sell for hundreds of dollars. And of course, both make money when they sell tickets to performances. The point is that money doesn't always come from where you expect it. To take another example, in the performing arts world, dance companies make about 30% of their revenue from ticket sales. And theater companies make more, about 60%, that way. That…
