Network devices

Network devices

- [Narrator] Okay, so let's talk about network devices. We talked about the OSI model and the different layers, now let's talk about the devices that operate those different layers. So, a repeater. A repeater is a layer one device, it's got almost no intelligence. It essentially just helps extend the network by allowing us to run cables for longer and longer distances. Now in the analog world we have amplifiers that amplify an analog signal. In the digital world we have repeaters, which essentially amplify digital signals. They hear a one coming in one interface, and they just play a louder one out the other interface. So, they hear a zero coming in that interface, and they play a louder zero out the other interface, so you can go another several hundred meters down the cable, for example. It's all about helping with attenuation and allowing distances to be increased. There's no intelligence. It doesn't understand the ethernet language, or the Token Ring language. And there's no…
