- I've got two computers here that are connected. They are connected via a switch. They could be connected via wireless. They could be thousands of miles apart connected through a huge mesh of the internet. It doesn't matter, because I guarantee they're connected. If I send data from one computer, I can get it to this computer. I've got each other's IP address, and we can talk. Now, here's the thing, just because I'm able to talk, we now have to have something to talk about, and that's where the whole world of internet applications comes into play. There's hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands of applications out there, but the trick is, is we have to organize stuff in such a way that they can talk to each other. In general, we break everything down into two forms of communication. There's going to be TCP-based applications and there's going to be UDP-based applications.
