Hard drive deep dive

- [Instructor] Hi, let's dig into hard disk drives. This is the basement. This is where all of this data gets stored. This is the fundamental building block of storage. Hard drives have a spindle, motor, and platters, a lot like a record player playing old vinyl LPs. So the platters are coated with a magnetic substance that can take charges. I can turn a zero to one back to a zero. The heads actually can change those charges, so the heads can read or write the zeros and the ones off of the magnetic platter. The platters are usually multiple, so there will be two to three or four platters. There will be data on both sides of the platter and the heads will be reading and writing from both sides of the platter. There's a single actuator arm that holds all of the heads in an actuator axis to make the heads rotate back and forth and an actuator magnet that will control the location of the heads. Additionally, hard drives have some sort of interface to the rest of the world and this…
