Four-step process

- [Instructor] If I were asked to identify the four steps in the four step method of Subnetting as succinctly as possible, these are the four steps. Number one. Where am I now? To answer this you look at the subnet mask not the IP address. Always remember that you are never on a bit. You're in a hole between two bits. So look at the subnet mask and then the goal is to determine which two bits you are between. Step number two. How many subnet bits do I need? Always answer using the same formula. Two to the power of S has got to be greater than or equal to the number of subnets needed. Now this is where S is the number of subnet bits that you're adding to the original subnet mask. And what you want is the S that gives you just what you need or a little bit more. That way you're conserving bits for the host portion of the address. Step number three. Add the bit values for the identified bits. Always move from the left toward the right. Total bit values can only be 128, 192, 224, 240…
