- In a world filled with web-based email, things like Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, Windows Live, we forget that in the traditional email world you install a client on your computer and that client goes, sends your email, and grabs your email. So, to understand that, well first of all, it's on the A so we need to, we need to appreciate there are three protocols that help make this happen. First of all, is SMTP. Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. SMTP is used for you to send email. So that's, oh by the way, it's on Port 25, okay. So, you use SMTP to send your email. So if you're at your computer and you're using your email client, you send on Port 25 and that sends it to an SMTP server, and the SMTP server gets it to the next guy. To get your email, to download your email from the server to your client, you use one of two protocols. Either POP3 or IMAP. Now, POP3 runs on Port 110 and IMAP runs on Port 143.
