Dealing with an unknown file type: Help Yourself: Tech Tips Weekly

Windows associates files based on the file name extension, up to four characters following the final period in a file name. The file name extension identifies the file type. When Windows encounters an unknown file type, you're prompted to choose a program to open the file. Unless you truly know which files belong to which programs, do not attempt to associate unknown file types. When receiving a unknown file type as a download or email attachment, do not attempt to open it.
