- [Instructor] Unlike the other areas explored in this course, Internet of Things is fairly new. Therefore, we don't have examples for a case study that span many devices, but we do have early signs of dangers lurking in these devices. For example, in 2016 the Mirai botnet infected multiple IoT devices and launched one of the biggest DDoS attack on Dyn, which is a security service provider. The botnet searched the internet for hackable IoT devices, such as digital cameras and DVRs, and leveraged those devices to mount the attack. Also, the FDA reported that St. Jude's Hospital cardiac devices have vulnerabilities that could allow a hacker to access the device and deplete the battery, or administer incorrect pacing or shock treatments. And we have many other examples like this, where connected devices like baby monitors, cars, such as the Jeep hack, and webcams have been hacked.
