Block IO and File IO

- [Instructor] So now we're going to jump into block IO and file IO. Here we've got an example of a simple server with both block and file, and let's compare the differences. So one application on the server is a database or an e-mail server. That's shown in item one. That database talks to a volume manager. The volume manager talks to a RAID adapter. The RAID adapter talks to blocks on the volume. So it reads and it writes, as signified in items three and item four. In contrast, file IO is an application. It's typically a single-user application like CAD or a software development. That application speaks to the operating system. Operating system speaks to the file system. File system speaks to the volume management. RAID adapter or HBA speaks to the drives themselves. The difference being block IO is typically for multi-user apps. It speaks in blocks. File IO is typically for single-user apps like CAD and Office, and it speaks in files. Please be aware their are exceptions, but this…
