What is citation and why cite?

- In this movie, we're going to explore citations. This is sometimes confusing and a little intimidating. But I hope that once you learn a little bit about it, it won't stress you out and you'll understand why it's so important. A very crucial part of research and information literacy is the ability to use information ethically. If you have found information useful to your research topic, it is your responsibility to attribute this information to its original author. Failure to do that is called plagiarism or knowingly passing off another artists' work as your own. That is one very compelling reason to cite your sources, because plagiarism is a serious academic offense. Citations are helpful for other reasons, too. They show that you have done your research and therefore can back up your ideas and hypotheses with good information. And during the research process, you'll be pleased to see that the sources you have used use citations as well, as it gives you a trail to follow, other…
