Read critically
- [Voiceover] One skill that really helps with comprehension and even with many normal reading comprehension questions is being able to identify what an author is trying to accomplish with a passage, or with any given part of that passage. So in this video, I'll talk about this skill which I call reading critically. So when you're reading critically, it's a good idea to be able to classify the passage. Is it opinion? Maybe it's just informational. And if you look at the structure of the passage, maybe you'll notice that there is an old way versus a new way. Maybe what people opposed to the author think will be contrasted with what the author thinks. You might see a problem versus a potential solution. So these are all things to start to think about as you read passages or even articles when you're reading a newspaper or a magazine.
