- Hi, I'm William Lidwell and this is Universal Principles of Design in this movie, Performance Load, Don't make me think, don't make me move. Frank Gilbreth began his working life as a bricklayer. And while on the job, he would closely watch how his fellow workers laid their bricks trying to figure out the optimal way of performing the task. It was a kind of obsession with him, and he was good at it. In one case, by eliminating inefficiencies in the process, he almost tripled the number of bricks that could be laid in one day. Gilbreth and his wife, Lillian, would go on to become leading thinkers in management and worker productivity in the early to mid-1900s. You may know them from the book and movie, Cheaper by the Dozen. The Gilbreths specialized in time-motion studies, carefully analyzing the movement and effort required to perform a task, in order to find the way requiring the least physical and mental effort.
