- [Instructor] Hi, I'm Jill Butler and this is the Universal Principles of Design. In this movie, Mental Models or why engineers are from Mars and users are from Venus. In the early part of 2016, Fiat Chrysler recalled over 800 thousand vehicles due to a new shifter design known as the rocker-switch gearshift. This style of gearshift ratchets through the traditional park, reverse, neutral, drive layout but it always returns to a center position. So what's the problem? Why the recall? In short, people were getting out of their cars mistakenly thinking the shifter was in park, to then have the car drive off without them. Chrysler said in a statement, "gear-selection is conveyed to the driver "by multiple sets of indicator lights, "not gear-selector position, "and unless due care is taken, "drivers may draw erroneous conclusions "about the status of their vehicles.
