If you had to guess, when does most adult learning occur? Is it through formal training courses like this one, or does it come from the employee's manager? A 2009 study by the American Society for Training and Development revealed that most learning occurs informally through an employee's own experiences. The study also described the untapped potential of planning for formal learning as part of the overall instructional design process. The 70-20-10 rule is a popular model that can help you account for informal learning in the training programs you design. It provides rough estimates for the percentage of learning that occurs from each source. Seventy percent of learning occurs informally from an employee's own experiences, 20% of learning occurs through coaching and direction from the employee's manager, and only 10% of learning occurs through formal training.
