- [Voiceover] Hi, I'm Jill Butler, and this is the Universal Principles of Design. In this movie, flow, or the power of getting people in the zone. The video game, Pac-Man was developed by Namco and introduced to American audiences in October of 1980. Game play is simple. Players use a joystick to guide a yellow pie-shaped character through a maze while eating dots and avoiding ghosts. Instantly popular, Pac-Man became the highest grossing arcade game of all time, taking in over $2.5 billion. That's 10 billion quarters. Pac-Man was also an icon of 1980s pop culture and inspired songs, spin-off arcade games, animated television shows, and a lot of game-themed merchandise. This quick, dramatic success completely surprised competitors and distributors. At the time of Pac-Man's release, the most popular arcade games were space shooters like Space Invaders and Asteroids.
