Join Aaron Quigley for an in-depth discussion in this video Creating playlists, part of Learning with Lynda.com.
The solution is to create a custom playlist that assembles elements of many videos and courses into a single place. And often you don't even need to do this yourself because you have access to pre-existing playlists created by others. There are three important things to know when it comes to playlists. First, you need to learn how to find existing playlists. Second, let's explore how to determine if a playlist is curated by Lynda.com or by another member and why that's important. And finally, let's learn how to create our own playlist if you didn't find exactly what you're looking for.
Let's go ahead and take a look at the Lynda.com playlist center. To get started, let's go ahead and head over to the playlist center. Here at the playlist center the very top is going to show you the most popular playlist that you can quickly look at. As I scroll down the page, I can see also see a list of all the pre-created playlists and even choose to sort them by the 12 major segments. If I click on any of these playlist icons it will automatically open up and give me a preview of what learning objective is being covered in the playlist and I can even scroll through the various items inside the playlist.
If I'd like to share the playlist, I can simply click on Share the link. If it seems like a playlist that I'd like to work through, all i have to do is click the plus button and it's going to automatically add that playlist to your playlist center and automatically take you there. From your playlist center, if you don't find a playlist that fit your need you also have the ability to create a custom playlist. For example, here I added the Explore Graphic Design playlist. However, if I want to let's say become a Freelance Graphic Designer, I might find that there's videos missing in this particular playlist that I'd like to add to.
So let's go ahead and create a custom playlist that we might use if we're going to become a Freelance Graphic Designer. To get started let's click Create new playlist. We'll go ahead a give our playlist a name of Becoming a Freelance Graphic Designer and if we'd like, we can also enter an optional description. Let's go and click the Create button. Now that our playlist is created there's several ways that we can add content to this. If I scroll to the bottom of the page I'll notice the search menu. Now the search menu functions very much like the search menu at the top of Lynda.com. Here, I can search for individual courses or videos.
I know that becoming a Freelance Graphic Designer is going to have something to do with graphic design. So let's go ahead and type that in as a search term. If I scroll down the page a little bit further I can see that I'm starting to get results back from Graphic design in both the form of courses as well as videos. Knowing that I'm looking to be a Freelance Graphic Designer perhaps this Graphic Design for Business Professionals course is something I'd be interested in. I can choose to add it to this playlist simply by clicking the plus button. As I scroll back up the page, I can now see that to this playlist I have one course added.
On the left hand side of the course title if I click the small blue toggle button I can now open this entire course up see the chapter name as well as movie names for this particular course. As I scroll through this, I may come to some content that I don't think is appropriate for this particular playlist. For example, maybe I know that I don't want to get into designing envelopes. If I'd like to remove any content I can simply hit the negative sign on the far right-hand side. If I hit this particular negative sign it's going to remove the entire chapter. I can also choose to remove individual videos. But let's go ahead and remove this chapter on Designing an Envelope.
You'll notice the chapter still shows up but it's grayed out. If for some reason as you move through this playlist you'd like to add this content back in, you could simply do that by hitting the plus sign. Now we've added some content to this playlist that has to do with Graphic design. I'm going to go ahead and close this course back up. If I wanted to I could come back down here and start searching for Business skills. And I could find courses on business skills that might be appropriate to running a business. For example, here's a course on Running a Design Business and I can quickly add that in to this particular playlist.
However, if I'm not seeing search results here for course content that I would like in the playlist I can always go up to the navigation menu, select a particular area, let's say Business and Business skills and find a list of courses that are appropriate to that particular topic. As I scrool through this course topic maybe I need to focus on Business Communication. Well here when I see the Communication Tips course I can quickly add it to the playlist using the drop down button on the left-hand side of the course title. When I select that here, I can choose the playlist that I am working on and it's going to automatically add that course into my playlist.
We can see this by heading back to My courses, selecting my Playlists and on the left-hand side we can select the Becoming a Graphic Designer playlist. Once again if I feel there are parts of these courses I don't need to be inside the playlist, I can always go to Edit playlist, open up a particular course I can choose to delete or even move around various elements so that my playlist is perfectly tailored to the exact learning goal that I am trying to achieve.
