- [Voiceover] Hi, I'm William Lidwell and this is the Universal Principles Of Design. In this movie, Consistency-- Why sometimes the best designs astonishes the least. Statistically speaking, flying is far safer than driving, flying that is, on a commercial jet. If you're flying in a helicopter over ocean however, the statistics aren't as kind. The worldwide mortality rate associated with civilian and military helicopter accidents flying over water is 25%. This means that if you work off shore, as an off shore oil worker for example, the most dangerous part of your job is getting to and from work. Why is this mortality rate so high? In short, when a helicopter ditches and starts to sink passenger and crew often can't get out. Why? People have a hard time locating the escape door, hatch, or window, and if they do they have a hard time opening them, and one of the main reasons is a lack of consistency in their design.
