- Now that you've found your images and determined how and where to use them in your research, you have one last step to complete: Citing them. We cite images for two reasons. First, to give credit to the owner or creator of the image, and second, to indicate to our reader where we found the image so that he or she can find it as well. If you reproduce an image of a work in the body of your paper, you will need to provide both a caption for it, as well as a citation in your bibliography or work cited. A caption is the text accompanying an image inserted into your paper. A citation is the reference included in your work cited page or bibliography. Let's talk about the similarities between a caption and a citation. Both citations and captions include the artist name, the title of the work, the date, if available, and the owner of the item.
