- [Voiceover] Hi, I'm Jill Butler, and this is the Universal Principles of Design. In this movie archetypes, or the power of instinctive appeal. In 1991 Sandia National Laboratories commissioned a multidisciplinary panel of experts to design a 10,000-year marker system for a nuclear waste disposal facility. The problem is that nuclear waste remains dangerous for thousands of years, potentially much longer than the life of a particular culture, language, or even a civilization. So, how can we warn future generations about the presence of a nuclear-waste disposal site when we have no idea what languages will be understood at that time? The panel of experts commissioned by Sandia National Labs was tasked with addressing this issue. The design brief required that the markers remained standing for the life of the radioactive hazard, 10,000 years; clearly warned people to stay away from the area; and assume that future civilizations will not be knowledgeable of radioactive hazards or speak…
