- So in this video, I'll show you an example of a high scoring issue essay that one of my students wrote. I'll point out things that I like and explain how they coincide with the GRE's scoring criteria. So the prompt for this essay is, "The effectiveness "of a country's leaders is best measured "by examining the well-being of that country's citizens." And here you have the first paragraph. So go ahead and take your time and read it if you would like. So in this paragraph, the writer is just explaining the potential reasoning of someone who agrees with the statement, there providing context by using the example of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Okay, in the next paragraph, the writer asserts that in contrast to the reasoning in the previous paragraph, the statement cannot be defended as it is currently written. She sets El Nino as an example of a circumstance that a leader cannot control, an example which effectively illustrates how a country's populace might suffer no matter how skilled…
