Join Aaron Quigley for an in-depth discussion in this video Adjust the video playback speed, part of Learning with Lynda.com.
- Going back to the neuroscience of learning, every person comprehends material at a different rate. In fact, our brains process information much faster than we can speak. This is why you're able to think about what you're going to say next while you're currently talking. For some, especially when reviewing information, it's helpful to move through it more quickly. One feature that can be really beneficial is the ability to change the playback speed of a course. Now, time is precious, and as you create playlists and follow learning guides, you may come across a video that's a bit redundant, or covers a topic that you're already familiar with.
Well, you can simply bump up the playback speed for that video. Or perhaps you're using the exercise files to follow along, and need some more time to act while listening to the author. In that case, reducing the playback speed may be helpful. Let's go ahead and take a look at how we change the playback speed on a course. Here I'm watching Screencasting Fundamentals with David Rivers, and he's actually talking about Adobe Captivate as an e-learning software, and he's going over how the interface is laid out. If this is something I'm already familiar with, maybe I'd like to bump up the playback speed and watch it at a quicker rate.
Here in the player window, on the right-hand side, is a gear icon. This will actually open up all of the settings menu. If I click on it, the very top set of options are the playback speed. Let's go and select 1.25, and then let's listen in to see how it's changed. - [Voiceover] Time to get comfortable in our surroundings by taking a tour of the user interface, and when you launch- - [Voiceover] You can hear that his voice is sped up quite a bit. Let's say, however, that I'm not familiar with Captivate, and I'd like him to slow down a bit, so I can really follow along on my computer with what it is that he's describing. I'm going to come back to the settings menu, and this time I'm going to select .75x.
Let's go ahead and listen in. - [Voiceover] Captivate, you're greeted with this welcome- - [Voiceover] As you can see, his voice has been slowed down, which is perfect if you're using the exercise files or trying to follow along. In my own workflow, I've noticed that when someone's describing a process to me, I typically speed that up, and then, when they're showing me the step-by-step instructions, I slow it down so I can follow along. This will help create an amazing learning experience, and allow you to maximize your time as you're learning. We also have a feature to allow us to jump back and re-hear the last 10 seconds of something an author just said.
For example, if I was still completing something with the exercise files, and I wanted to re-hear what the author said, I can simply use the back 10 seconds button, which is directly to the right of the play button, and I can skip back and re-hear what I just heard. Let's go ahead and take a look at this. I'm going to go to the settings menu and put us back at just 1x, or regular speed. Let's go ahead and play this video, and then I'm going to jump back ten seconds and we can re-hear exactly what we just heard. - [Voiceover] The welcome screen gives you a number of different options to help you get started. For example, you'll see at the top, recent and- And when you launch Captivate 8, you're greeted with this welcome screen, and the welcome screen gives you a- - [Voiceover] Using these features, such as changing the speed, and being able to jump back 10 seconds to re-hear what an author just said, will help make sure that you're moving through the material at a rate that makes sense for you and your individualized learning goal.
