What is a mailing list?

- The term Mailing List is kind of nebulous. It can refer simply to a list of email addresses or to the group of people represented by those addresses or to the messages they send to each other or even to the software that manages the list and the messages or to the central address to which people can send messages to be redistributed to the addresses or any and all of these at once. When it's necessary to distinguish, I'll try to refer to the people on the list as subscribers or members, their email addresses as subscribed addresses, the messages as list messages or sometimes digests, the software as Mailman or the mailing list manager, and the email address to which messages are sent for redistribution as the list address. But you may hear people say, "Send a message to the list" when they mean send a message to the list address so that it will go to all the list subscribers. Or they may say, "Did you see that crazy thing on the "so and so mailing list yesterday?" when what they…
