Understanding and controlling bounce processing
- Whenever you send email, you run the risk that the message will not arrive. Sometimes messages just vanish into the bit bucket, sometimes they are rejected by the recipient's mail server. This rejection is known as a Bounce. Mailman includes an Automatic Bounce Processing System which disables and then removes subscribers from the list if messages to the subscriber Bounce too much. The sender address of Mailman list messages is generally set to list-bounces@host. In this case that would be, ceramics-bounces@alumni.rouxacademy.org, which means that when a message is returned to sender for some reason the error goes to this address. You can override this behavior with the, Should the sender header be re-written option on the General Options page, but the default of Yes is recommended. Mailman examines any mail sent to the Bounces address and tries to figure out who the bounced message was being sent to, and how serious the bounce was.
